Cardiotocography (CTG) only package: (Baby Monitoring)

Cardiotocography (CTG) is a crucial device in pregnancy care that measures the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions. This non-invasive test gives important information about your baby's health and aids healthcare providers in ensuring a safe delivery.

What is cardiotocography (CTG)?

Cardiotocography, or CTG, is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate fetal health throughout pregnancy and delivery. It includes constant monitoring of the fetal heart rate and the mother's uterine contractions to detect any signs of fetal distress.

Why is CTG important?

CTG is necessary for:

1).   Monitoring Fetal Health: Provides real-time data on the baby's heart rate patterns, allowing for the detection of any anomalies.

2).   Assessing Uterine Activity: Determines the frequency and severity of uterine contractions, which is essential for labor management.

3).   Early Detection of Distress: Detects symptoms of fetal distress, such as variations in heart rate, enabling for appropriate measures to ensure the baby's wellbeing.

How does CTG work?

Preparation: The pregnant woman lies on her back or side in a comfortable position.
Sensor placement: Two sensors (transducers) are located on the abdomen. The first uses ultrasound to assess the fetal heart rate, while the second uses pressure changes to identify uterine contractions.

Data Collection: The sensors provide data to a monitor, which collects and shows the fetal heart rate and contractions for 20-30 minutes.

Analysis: Healthcare specialists examine the recorded data to determine the baby's health and the course of labor.

When is CTG used?

CTG can be employed.

During routine prenatal visits, particularly in the third trimester for high-risk pregnancies or if there are concerns about fetal movements. In labor, continuously monitor the baby's status and the effectiveness of contractions to ensure both mother and baby's safety.
Post-Due Date: To monitor the baby's health if the pregnancy extends beyond the planned due date.In cases of reduced fetal movements, investigate and ensure that the baby is not in distress.

Benefits of CTG:

  • Non-invasive: Safe and painless for both mother and baby.
  • Real-time monitoring provides rapid information about fetal health.
  • Early action: Enables prompt medical action if anomalies or distress are discovered.
  • Reassurance: Gives pregnant mothers peace of mind by confirming the baby's health status.

Who Should Get CTG?

CTG is very useful for:

  • High-Risk Pregnancy: Women with diabetes, hypertension, or a history of pregnancy problems.
  • Post-Due Pregnancy: Monitoring after the scheduled due date.
  • Concerns about Fetal Movements: Instances of decreased fetal activity.
  • Labor: Continuous monitoring to maintain fetal well-being.

What To Expect During a CTG Test:

Comfortable Setting: The procedure is carried out in a comfortable setting, such as a maternity clinic or hospital.

The test normally lasts 20-30 minutes, although it may take longer if more comprehensive monitoring is required.

Results: Your healthcare professional will analyze and discuss the results with you, offering reassurance or proposing further steps as needed.
