  • What is Epidural?

    • Epidural Anaesthesia is an advance in pain management during labor, in which painkilling drugs are passed into the small of your back via a fine tube.

      It is a Regional Anaesthetic, so the drug is injected around the nerves that carry signals from the part of your body that feels pain in labour. It will numb your tummy and provide you with very effective pain relief.


  • How is an Epidural Done?


    • • Epidural Analgesia is the very popular and is being used safely for more then 20 years


      • In Epidural method patient’s back is cleaned with an antiseptic liquid and the area where the catheter is to be introduced is numbed with a local anesthetic.


      • Anesthetic Medicine is introduced at regular intervals depending on the requirement and intensity of the pain. This procedure is SAFE for both the baby and the mother.



  • What Will It Feel Like?

    • • When the epidural is in place,you'll feel just a stick or pinch and some pressure. Of course, you may be aware of the catheter in your back, which can be annoying for some women, but it isn't painful or uncomfortable.


      • As the doctor adjusts the dosage, your legs may feel a little weak, warm, tingly, numb, or heavy. Unlike some other labor and delivery medications, epidurals don't affect your mind. You'll still feel alert and aware of what's going on.



  • How Long Will It Take?

    • • It only takes a couple of minutes to insert an epidural. You should start to feel the effects in about 10 to 20 minutes. The epidural catheter will stay in place throughout your labor and delivery.



  • What Will I Feel Like After Delivery?

    • • After you have given birth, the epidural catheter is removed by removing the tape around it and pulling the catheter out.


      • You may still experience numbness in your legs for several hours. Occasionally mothers will feel weak in the legs or even numb for longer periods of time. Back pain may also occur at the site of the epidural.



  • What are the Benefits?

    • • If you have painless (epidural) Delivery, you will feel better pain relief than other methods, particularly when you move.


      • There may be quicker return to eating, drinking and full movement, possibly with a shorter stay in hospital compared to other methods of pain relief.



  • What Are the Risks?

    • Painless (Epidural) Delivery have some side effects:

      • cause temporary difficulty with urination


      • Rarely cause the mother's blood pressure to drop, which can quickly treated by medications & Position changes.


      • very rarely cause bleeding

      Your partner can praise, reassure or encourage you. Just holding you and keeping eye contact with you can be hugely comforting. This may reduce your anxiety levels and lessen your pain.

  • Entonox for Labor Pain Management

    • • Entonox, more popularly known as gas and air, is a form of diversion from the pain of contractions during labour, and is more prominently used in the first stage of labour when contractions are light.


      • Entonox (gas and air) is a colourless, odorless gas made up of half oxygen and half nitrous oxide. It's also known as laughing gas. It has a calming effect and can take the edge off labor pain, rather than blocking it out.



  • Pethidine for pain relief in labour

    • • Pethidine is a widely used for pain relief in labour


      • Pethidine works my mimicking the effects of endorphins - the body’s own morphine-like substances. One of the functions of endorphins is to act as the body’s natural pain killer. Pethidine (like endorphins) attaches to special sites on the outside of nerve cells.


      • Pethidine acts on the central nervous system by inhibiting the pain signals that are sent to the brain. The subsequent result can reduce the pain experienced by the woman in labour.
