A hysterectomy is an operation to remove a woman's uterus. The uterus is the place where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant. Sometimes, the ovaries and fallopian tubes also are taken out. Hysterectomies are very common.

Your health care provider might recommend a hysterectomy if you have

• Fibroids

• Endometriosis not cured by medicine or surgery

• Uterine prolapse - when the uterus drops into the vagina

• Cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries

• Vaginal bleeding that persists despite treatmentn

• Chronic pelvic pain; surgery can be a last resort

Before having a hysterectomy, it is important to discuss other possible treatments with your health care provider. A hysterectomy will stop your periods, and you will no longer be able to get pregnant. If the surgery removes both ovaries, you will enter menopause.

There are 3 types of hysterectomy:

Abdominal

Abdominal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed through an incision in the lower abdomen. One or both ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed during the procedure

Laparoscopic

Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) is a surgical procedure using a laparoscope to guide the removal of the uterus and/or Fallopian tubes and ovaries through the vagina (birth canal). (A different procedure, called a laparoscopic hysterectomy, is entirely performed using a laparoscope and other instruments inserted through tiny abdominal incisions, and the uterus, Fallopian tubes etc. are removed in tiny portions.)

Not all hysterectomies can or should be done by LAVH. In certain situations, a laparoscopic hysterectomy may be sufficient. In other cases, an abdominal hysterectomy or a vaginal hysterectomy (without laparoscopy) is indicated. The surgeon determines the appropriate procedure for each individual case based upon the reason for the hysterectomy and the medical history and condition of the patient.

Vaginal

Vaginal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus through the vagina. Vaginal hysterectomy involves a shorter time in the hospital, lower cost and faster recovery than does the most common alternative, abdominal hysterectomy. However, if your uterus is enlarged, vaginal hysterectomy may not be possible.
